My idol. ( Exodus 20 v 3 - 5 )

We often people saying so and so is my idol,especially in relation to sport or film stars,I remember visiting a home years ago ,and as I walked though the door,I was confronted with with a large cardboard cut out of John Wayne. Now I don't know if the person saw John Wayne  as his idol,but it looked that way to me ,idolatry is still rife in this modern age. It does not take the shape of a wooden or stone idol,but it is real never the less.Whatever form it comes in it is wrong, for in essence,there is only one God Isaiah 44 v 6,which reads ,'I am the first and the last; apart from me there is no God'.Isaiah in that same chapter points out the worthlessness of idols. Barry Webb writes the following,'Idolatry is the worst sin of all,because it moves God to the periphery of our lives and puts something else in His place'.He also says,'The modern world is no less given over to idolatry than the ancient one,it is just that its cruder forms were more prevalent then'.Think all those things that can become a source of worship, sex,money,pleasure,power ,and a multitude of other things. Christians can be sucked into idolatry consider the wisest king who ever lived became an idolator ,and in doing that he was disobeying God, and his influence,would have caused many to follow in his footsteps.His actions brought judgement upon the nation he ruled.if people throw of the worship of God Jehovah, they will  soon turn to those things that are not gods,in fact they are demonic. It was William Cowper who wrote the following,

                                                       'The dearest idol I have known,
                                                        What'er that idol be,
                                                         Help me to tear it from Thy throne
                                                         And worship only Thee.'

A grim fact. ( Romans 6 v23 )

A wise man was out walking, and he saw a lovely baby in a pram full of life,and the wise man said,'but this child shall die.As he walked on he saw a young lad came skipping along,full of the joys of spring,and the wise said ,'he also shall die. As he continued his walk he observed coming out a church,a young couple that had just got married,and he thought about their future,getting a home,having children,and many other things,and then he said ,'they also shall die'.As he walked along he met an old man whom he spoke to,the old man shared many things with him,his past joys ,and even his hope for the future,and as the wise man walked away from him,he thought,'he also shall die'.Why does this world have such a stench of death about it,we are reminded of this in many ways in the continual wars that are raging,and the dreadful natural disasters..It was Martyn Lloyd Jones, who wrote, 'from the moment we are born ,we are dying'. He also said,''that all the trouble in the world today is due to the fact that man is not right with God.'This is because sin has entered into the world ,and the moment it came death became a reality.(Genesis 2 v17/ Romans 5 v12.),Yes the grim fact is this we all shall die,but there is hope,for our lovely Saviour Jesus died that even though we die we shall live (John 11 v25).Through Him sin can be forgiven ,and a new life will be granted to all who trust Him as one's Saviour.

Prayer is! ( Ephesians 6 v 18)

 In a recent sermon I preached on prayer I finished by reading a lovely hymn, by James Montgomery ,I leave it with you.

                                     'Prayer is the soul'sincere desire,uttered or unexpressed,

                                     The motion of a hidden fire,that trembles in the breast.

                                     Prayer is the burden of a sigh,the falling of a tear,

                                     The upward glancing of an eye,when none  but God is near.

                                     Prayer is the simplest form of speech,that infant lips can try;

                                     Prayer the sublimest strains that reach,the Majesty on high.

                                     Prayer is the christian's vital breath,the christian's native air,

                                     His watchword at the gate of death,he enters heaven with prayer.

                                     Prayer is the contrite sinners voice,returning from his way;

                                     While angels in their songs rejoice, and cry,Behold he prays!

                                     O Thou by whom we come to God, the Life,the Truth,the Way!

                                     The path of prayer Thyself hast trod; Lord teach us how to pray!

Don't departmentalize. ( Revelation 3 v 20 )

Queen Victoria's prime minister, Lord Melbourne, is supposed to have said,' Things have come to a pretty  pass  when religion is seeking to invade a man's private life'. I suppose there are people who departmentalize their lives,their faith relates to attending a church,that's it,and does not encroach into their general life.Of course if one is a Christian them it should effect all of our lives, we cannot leave it behind at any stage of our lives. It is not like a change of clothes, I suppose this may seem obvious, but for some people it may not be. It is one thing singing ,' I surrender all',and then living it out in every aspect of our lives.People can get touchy about so many things,and resentful if they are challenged as regards aspects of their lives, after all its nobodies business ,what they do.Jesus challenged a disciple by asking him,did he love Him more that others?.Consider the church of Laodicea that we read about in Revelation 3,they were rich materially,but so very poor spiritually. Michael Wilcock writes the following,'The church is the image of the city reversed in a black negative. Financiers,physicians,clothing manufactures are among its notable citizens; but 'poor ,blind , and naked' is the verdict on its church. 'It has failed to find  in Christ the source of all true wealth, splendour, and vision'.Verse 20 is very telling,it is Jesus who is speaking to them,'Here I am ! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will go in and eat with him,and He with me'.

Man's inhumanity to man.( Romans 3 v 10 - 18 )2

 Last time we mention Nineveh ,and that God was going to judge them,for their wickedness, they conquered  many nations among them the northern kingdom Israel.This had been a judgement on the northern  kingdom of Israel for their sinfulness.But as Gordon Brown writes,' God uses Assyria to discipline Israel but she exceeded the mandate God gave her and acted with greed and arrogance'. The fact is they were an exceeding cruel people showing no mercy on those they  conquered, a Julia Woods writes about an Assyrian relief showing,'bodies impaled on sticks,tongues being cut out,people being led out by lip rings,heads being piled up,dismembered bodies with scattered limbs and severed heads serving as ornamental decorations on walls and structures and totem poles made of  human heads'. One Assyrian king boasted,'3000 captives I burned with fire....from some I cut off their hands and their fingers.from others I  cut of their noses,their ears and their fingers. of  many I put out their eyes'. They were also  involved in witchcraft and the occult, all of these these things made them ripe for judgement. Julia Woods  further comments,'Atrocities  committed in the name of a nation appears to bring judgement on the whole nation'.The more I read history the more convinced I am of mankind's fallen nature,and the more convinced I am, of  mankind's need of a Saviour called Jesus.

Nineveh ( 2 Peter 3 v 3 - 16) 1

Assyria was a very powerful nation,their capital was Nineveh , most Christians know the story of the reluctant prophet Jonah whom God sent to Nineveh to warn them, that judgement was coming because of their great wickedness. The result was they believed the prophet,and turned from their sinful ways and sought God's forgiveness,and God forgave ,and did not judge them.But sad to say that didn't last for long instead of things getting better things got worse.God raised up another  prophet,who proclaimed ,that judgement was coming,his name was Nahum.As one writer declares,' For perhaps a hundred or more years God had continued to be patient,to no avail,again the historians tells us ,' Nineveh has been called 'the concentrated centre of evil in the ancient world'.It is Gordon Bridger who writes ,'If we persist in rejecting  God and His Word,He gives us over to sin and judgement.' He further says,God is very patient. Justice will be done,and reminds us

                                                  'Tho' the mills of God grind slowly

                                                   Yet they grind exceeding small'

Eugenics. ( Romans 5 v 8)

 A writer in a national newspaper wrote,' Eugenics was invented by a certain kind of person,solid in their belief that they were superior,to describe other people they thought to be unfit,badly raised, inclined  towards feral immorality or just from bad stock'. She further comments,' The birth control pioneer Marie Stopes was partly inspired by her desire to prevent ''reckless breeding'' from the ''worst end'' of the social scale. And then of course ,there were the Nazis'. There will always be people who think they are better than others,today in schools, some children will be made feel they are inferior to others. As one looks at history we see it magnified to a fearful scale,and so it will continue,for we humans are so often given over to pride, which drives us to look down on others.It is all very flawed and deeply sinful, the fact is God loves everybody,that means everybody,He puts no one down on account  of any deformity, colour ,status, nationality,He loves everyone.He loves everyone so much that He give His only begotten Son,that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  (John 3 v16)

No ( Psalm 18 v 30)

 There is one word Children don't like,and it is no,when I am at a supermarket ,I hear the wail of the Banshee,the sound fills the whole supermarket,no it's not the Banshee,it is a child being told 'no  you can't have that',by it's mother, I exaggerate not,and I say to myself ,'children should be seen and not heard'. There are times when God has to say no to us,we have a number of times recorded in the Bible when God said no to three people .( 1) Moses,he acted rashly,didn't trust the Lord,he was not allowed to go into the promised land,(Numbers 20 v12),later he pleaded with God to go into the Land,but God said, no.( Deut 3 v23- 26)   (2 )David ,he wanted to build a temple for God and God said ,no ( 2 Samuel 7)  (3) Paul was suffering from what he called a thorn in the flesh,he prayed for healing, God said no.  ( 2 Corinthians 12 v 7 - 10) Why did God say no?,well there were good reasons why He said no. When we were Children our parents  would say no to us, and we didn't like it,and we huffed and cried,but now looking back,we realise they knew best,and usually it was for our own good,and also they loved us. So it is our heavenly Father who loves us,and knows what's best for us,will say no to us .Although it may be very painful at this time, remember the words of Paul when he wrote ,'then shall we know' (1 Cor 13 v 12)

Free to choose.( Deuteronomy 30 v 15)

 The poet Whittier wrote,  'For  all the sad words of tongue or pen,  The saddest are these;' It might have been'.    The greatest tragedy that ever happened took place in the garden of Eden,God give clear instructions to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,He told them the consequences,if they did Adam and Eve would die.(Genesis 2 v 17). Alas they disobeyed,they died,for the wages of sin is death ,and all that followed had the stench of death upon it ,for we inherited a sinful nature.If only they had not sinned,if only they had obeyed,what might have been.Very sad and very depressing,yet God had a plan a rescue plan a plan filled with hope,from what have been,for what could be,a Saviour would come,His name would be Jesus.Through His death and resurrection we could be forgiven all our sins,and death would not hold us, we could experience eternal life.It depends on one thing obedience to the gospel,would we believe on Christ as our Saviour ,God has given us the freedom of  choice,just like he granted to Adam and Eve.What will be your choice, will it be life by accepting Christ?,or  death by rejecting Him?, the choice is yours.

We change,God doesn't. ( Malachi 3 v 6)

 I read this recently,' Change is the only constant in life',so very true, I am sure I don't need to remind you of this,we are reminded of this everywhere we look.It was Heraclitus who said,'You cannot step in the same river twice',because the river is constantly changing.in other words if you step in a river,you are stepping into a specific bit of water,and If you withdraw your foot and step in again,you are stepping in a different bit of water. It was Henry F.Lyte who wrote,'Change and decay in all around I see; O Thou who changest not ,abide with me'. Unlike creation that is always changing God does not change, God is immutabile, He has no physical body,He is spirit, his moral character does not change. Tozer wrote,' In God no change is possible; in men change is impossible to escape'. Charles Wesley wrote,'And all things as they change proclaim. The Lord eternally the same'. 'For the Christian it is a great comfort that He is the same everyday always welcoming,never changes His  mind,His love is constant ( Jeremiah 31 v 3) His mercy is assured ,likewise His presence,and His power. It is a source of wondrous strength to know that the God with whom we have to do changes not. That His attitude towards us is the same as it was in eternity past and will be in eternity to come'.( Tozer)

Do you want to know a secret?( Proverbs 3 v5 - 6)

 Augustine was asked a question, 'What was God doing  before He made the world'? Augustine answered,  'Making  hell for people who ask questions like that''. The fact is there are so many  things we don't  about God,and we may never know. God is under no obligation to tell us everything. Deuteronomy 29 v 29,tells us,'The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children for ever, that we may follow all the words of the law'.  We have two things highlighted in this verse, God has His secrets which He will not  reveal to us,but there are things He has revealed to us.Nothing is going to change that,it will remain locked to us those secret things.That is where obedience and trust comes in, when God commands us do something then we must obey,though it may cost us everything. Whatever it may cost us,we are called to trust our God and follow Him,ours is not to reason why our's is but to do or die',Why is  it,I continually hear the words ,'Trust Me'?, for that's what I need to do, that's what we all need to do,it  was Edgar Page Stiles who wrote the following hymn.

                                  'Simply trusting everyday,trusting through a stormy way;

                                   Even when my faith is small,trusting Jesus that is all.

                                   Brightly doth His Spirit shine,into this poor heart of mine;

                                   While He leads I cannot fall, trusting Jesus that is all.

                                   Singing,if my way be clear; praying if the path be drear;

                                    If in danger,for Him call; trusting Jesus that is all.

                                   Trusting Him while life shall last,Trusting Him till earth shall past,

                                    Trust within the jasper wall; Trusting Jesus, that is all.

                                                      Trusting as the moments fly,

                                                      Trusting Him as days go by;

                                                      Trusting Him whate'er befall

                                                      Trusting Jesus that is all.'

Hudson Taylor. ( Matthew 9 v 37 - 38 )

 I would like to share with you something I  read recently as regards Hudson Taylor. He was the founder of the China Inland Mission, now known as the,'Overseas Missionary Fellowship'. He believed that the work in China needed a thousand new missionaries to be found in the space of five years for the work to be established. He took the matter to the Lord in prayer and shared his concerns with Christian friends. The task seemed impossible to some of his friends. So they asked him how he could imagine that so many people could be found in so short of time. His answer was simple and convincing. 'When I look at the map of mainland China  I cannot see how I could ask for less. And when I look at the promises of God in the Bible, I do not see why I should ask for less!

Rough diamonds. ( 1 John 3 v 2 )

If I would describe myself, I suppose I would call myself a rough diamond,yet I feel we are all rough diamond to some extent, for the simple reason we are all sinners. A friend of mine has a young daughter who was having a bit of grief,with other children.Her dad sought to explain to her that there are nice people  out there ,and this young child answered ,'yes there are, but they are still sinners'.Very insightful for a young child,all Christians are but sinners saved by grace,and although we have been forgiven, we still have a sinful nature within us (Galatians 5 v 16ff), so does that not mean that we are all rough diamonds to some extent?, I think so .Did not the greatest of the apostles say he was not perfect (Phil 3 v 12). So we are all imperfect beings,rough diamonds. Consider when a diamond comes out of the ground,it may not look like a diamond,it has to go through a process,before it becomes that beautiful gem, that we all so admire . So it is that we have to experience a  process which we could call sanctification,in order that we may look more and more like Jesus. That process can involve many things,like Pauls thorn in the flesh, like Davids painful experience with a son who sought to kill him,like Joseph being hated by his brothers,being sold into slavery,of being  falsely accused and imprisoned for something he didn't do.Someone has said ,'Nearly all of God's jewels are crystallized tears'.As one song puts it

                                               'When He cometh ,when He cometh

                                                To make up His  jewels.

                                                All His jewels,precious jewels

                                                 His loved and His own

                                                 Like the stars of the morning

                                                 His bright crown adorning,

                                                 They shall shine in their beauty

                                                  Bright gems for His crown.'

Sexual morality ( Romans 3 v 23 )

 In raising the subject of homosexuality , I hope I have not come across in a wrong unloving way,one of  my purpose in writing what I have, is to clarify how God's word makes it clear ,that it is sinful, and like all sin it comes under the judgement of God. God will judge all sin one day,you may not be a homosexual but you are a sinner needing to be saved from coming wrath.God is a forgiving God but those who choose to ignore His offer of forgiveness will suffer  terrible consequences,not only  homosexuals will be shut out of God's eternal kingdom, all will be, unless they repent of their sins. I am reminded of the account of the lady who caught in the very act adultery,she was brought to Jesus by the religious leaders,they said she should be stoned,but declared ,he that is without sin cast the first stone. The result was the all were convicted of their  sin, and left,Jesus did not condemn her to death, but he did not ignore  her sin,and told her to leave her life of sin. ( John 8 v 1 -11).Jesus says to all ,leave your sinful   ways and come to me and have your sins forgiven. One writer wrote the following, 'Here we are faced to face with the eternal situation of the gospel,the eternal choice. Jesus confronted that women with a choice that day, she could go back to her old ways or she could reach out to the new way with Him'.

                                                    'What will you choose?'.

Sexually morality . ( Romans 1 v 18 )

 Just recently the Anglican church ruling body met to discuss and vote on the clergy being able to bless same sex relationships, the vote was carried.This is so sad and will cause a great division world wide within the Anglican community. Following this vote a letter was published in a national newspaper by a former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord  Carey '',What has taken place will be out of step with the book that has influenced our Church more than anyone else; the Bible. There is no doubt in my mind that the General Synod has taken a step away from the foundational roots of the scriptures'. To the charge that we who oppose the vote by the Anglican Church Synod,that we do not represent the God of love.We reply in the words of John Stott that God's love is a holy love,and his love will not accept that which He declares is sinful.He will not compromise on that,nor should any  Christian . In my last blog on this subject,I mention the Bishop who said to a young minister,'go look at the NT'.It is strange that he stipulated only the NT, it shows where he stands in relation to the whole of   scripture.Let us see what the OT and  NT,says about homosexuality ,in Leviticus 18 v 22,it is called an abomination. We can point to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah,of course they  committed other sins CP Lev18, but it is homosexuality that is  highlighted there. Lets move to the NT,to Romans 1 v 26-27,were it is described as shameful lustful,unnatural,indecent,perversion.'.There are practicing homosexuals who called themselves  Christians,they are not ,in 1 Corinthians 6 v 9 we are told clearly,'they will not inherit the kingdom of God'.

Sexual morality. ( Romans 1 v 18ff ) 1

 We live in a moral universe ,but we live in a fallen world,where the morals of this world run contrary to the morals of God's kingdom. Those within the kingdom of God are expected  to live by the morality of  God's kingdom.In  so called western societies ,things have gradually changed,things that were once  seen as wrong are now seen as being right.Those things that used to be unacceptable  are now applauded,and celebrated,they have parades where they openly declare their sexuality as being normal. The media continually supports this and those who hold contrary views are not given a voice. The advertisement world also are likewise pushing seculars world views of sexual relationships. So where does that leave us within the kingdom of God?,and how should we act in this situation?.A certain Bishop who appears to favour  going along with the world view of sexuality, and has pushed for the church to bless same sex relationships,  when questioned as to the wrongness of his views he replied  go and read the NT. Before we go into that, I wonder why he said  just  the NT?, the OT surely is as valid as the NT. CP 2 Timothy 3 v16.next time we will consider this further.

He is!. ( Psalm 46)

Sometimes I think that the world is like a troubled sea,so much unrest,one thing after another,that's not counting ones personal difficulties ,and trials.Se here is what God say's,in Nahum 1 v 7 ,'The Lord is good ,a refuge in times of trouble,He cares for those who trust in Him'.The first thing it tells us that God is a good .I have experienced the goodness of God all through my life.He has always been there for me,in times of sadness,in difficult times,all the time.I could mention many things to confirm that.Money was very short,in fact often we had none,yet we prayed.One day a there was  a knock at our  door,when we opened it there was a man with a basket load of shopping,he said someone had asked him to deliver that.Next we have God mentioned as a refuge in times of trouble.It was the time of the Mau Mau troubles in Kenya, often African Christians were targeted,one day a Christian was faced with a Mau Mau pointing a pistol  at his head.A  verse of scripture came inti his head,'The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe'.(Proverbs18 v10),so he immediately shouted out .' Jesus ,Tower',four times he did this,and four times his attacker fired his pistol and didn't hit him.'Last but not least,'He cares for those who trust in Him'.let us remember there is one who is looking after us,His name is Jesus.

He is watching. (Psalm 10 )

 I heard someone say as regards  ,'Stalin, Hitler, and the like they thought that God was not watching them. In Psalm 10 v 11, we read,The wicked think,''God isn't watching us!,He has closed His eyes and won't even see what we do.With the result that they do not see what punishment is awaiting them, and punishment will await them,that is certain.This does not just apply to the most wicked of people,it applies to all who like them live as if there is no God, who do not feel that they are accountable to a holy God.We are told that after death there is judgement, Hebrews 9 v 27, that includes every person who has chosen to live without Christ. They may not have given  God a thought ,they did it their way, that's become the funeral hymn of the non- Christian.People think that God will not hold them to account, but He will, it will become crystal clear on that day,as judgement is passed.There will be no ambiguity on judgement day,in Scottish courts,a verdict of 'not proven' can be reached ,and the person can go free,not so on Judgement day that will not happen.The very one who could have been your Saviour, the one you ignored, never give Him a thought ,will be your judge.

But I am weak.( Psalm 27 v 1

 What about tomorrow? ,I feel so weak,and God spoke and said,''As your days,so shall your strength be'' (Deut 33 v 25). In Psalm 68 v 35 we are told,'The God of Israel, He is the one who gives strength and power to His people'.If we are Christians let us remember without Christ we can do nothing ( John 15 v 6 ). How did Samson kill a young lion?, how did he do all those great feats that are recorded,was it because he was mister universe? ,no,we read,' The Spirit of the Lord came upon him ( Judges 14 v 6) Did  the apostle Paul accomplish all that he did because  of his upbringing, no he declared,'I can do all things through Christ,which strengtheneth me( Philippians 4 v 13)   Consider his words,''when I am weak ,then am I strong'' ( 2 Corinthians 12 v 12). We  humans, yes even those who are Christians are inclined to boast of what they have accomplished, and take the glory instead of giving God the glory.To enable us or to prevent us doing this God weakens us,with Paul it was a thorn in the flesh, with Gideon, God reduced his army to a pittance,to fight against a vast army,why?,so that they could not boast and say,'My own strength has saved me'.( Judges 7 v 2 )

If I gained the world.( Mark 8 v 36)

 There  is an incident recorded in three of the synoptic  gospels,(Mt  19 v 16-26,Mk,  10 v17- 31 and Lk,18 v18 -27 ) It is about a rich young ruler, who wanted to know from Jesus how could he could obtain eternal life. The law is mentioned , Christ tells him to keep the commandments.Which ones? Jesus mentions six,the last being,' You shall love your neighbour as yourself' ( Leviticus 19 v 18),These words are a summing up of our attitude towards others. Let us also remember that we cannot be saved by keeping the law,(  Gal 3 v10 ff) as we will see. The young man said that he kept the commandments mentioned,so Jesus put Him to the test, and told him,to sell his possessions and to give to the poor,and come follow Him.Sad to say the love of His money won the day and he went away sad for he owned  much property.Anna Olander wrote a hymn called,'If I gained the world ,but lost the Saviour'.

                                                'O what emptiness !-without the Saviour

                                                 Mid the sins and sorrows here below!

                                                 And eternity, how dark without Him!

                                                 Only night and tears and endless woe!

                                                 What ,tho' I might live without the Saviour,

                                                  When I come to die , how would it be?

                                                  O to face the valley's gloom without Him!

                                                  And without Him  all eternity'.

Armchair General ( Matthew 19 v 21 )

 I am reading an interesting book,called 'The Armchair General', written by James Buckley,it takes the reader back to the 2nd world war,and highlights the  decisions that those in power had to make.For instance  Churchills decision to fight on,the author attempts to show what may have happened if he had decided not to fight on,and negotiated with Hitler. So the question is what would you have done if you were in Churchills place?,it is very intriguing, a bit of fun.Of course every day we make decisions, some people try to avoid making decisions,but even that is a decision,the fact is we cannot escape making decisions.A lot of decisions are not very important,others have a measure of importance,then others are very important.The whole subject is as I have said  all very intriguing,as I look back on my life,I suppose I can highlight some of the main decisions in my life, getting married,having children, learning to drive,going to Bible college ,coming to England as a minister,then working as a support worker with the mentally  ill.They are all important decisions,but by far the most important decision in my life,is when I trusted Jesus as my Saviour. That decision has had such consequences for me spiritually,morally, eternally,all bound up in the person of Jesus.You cannot go wrong when you put your trust in Jesus,it is a gain,gain ,gain decision.

A stimulant .( Psalm 55 )

 I think it was Brooks the Puritan who wrote that God often drives us to the place of prayer,by thorns.So often Israel was driven back to God by the difficulties they faced,difficulties created by their backsliding ways. We see this in the times of the Judges,in which we read that,' every man did that which right in his own eyes' (21 v25).Think of King David ,consider his turbulent history ,one trouble after another,this was the pattern of his life, even to his old age,when his son rebelled against him.Along with that pattern of difficulties he had another pattern,prayer. Most of the Psalms were written by David, and many of his Psalms are asking for protection, and deliverance from his enemies.When the enemy was at the gate what did Hezekiah do?,he prayed ,consider that wonderful prayer in 2 Kings 19 v 14 - 19.Yes he was driven to prayer,the difficulties we face are as it were a stimulant for us to pray,and to pray more earnestly. I leave with you a part of a prayer from the,'The valley of vision'.

                                          'Send your Spirit who is the searcher of my heart,

                                           to show me more of my corruptions and

                                           helplessness,that I may flee to Thee, cling to

                                          Thee,rest on Thee,as the beginning and end of

                                          Thy salvation.May I not vex Him by my

                                          indifference and waywardness, grieve Him by

                                         my cold welcome,resist Him by my hard rebellion.

                                         Answer my prayers, O Lord for Thy great name's

                                         sake.'

Greater love.( Romans 5 v 10 )

Some people you do remember ,Sam Jackson was one of them,he was older than me,although he was brought up in the same street that I lived in, I didn't really know him when I was young.I don't even know what he worked at,but he was a Christian, he married a girl called Lila,and they had four children, I taught one of them in my Sunday school class.Sam was one of the leaders in a young peoples work in the church ,and then one weekend he and the young people went to the Mourne Mts. It was the next day I  heard  ,there had been a fatal accident,it appears that in a attempt to save his son from falling,he fell to his death.That was a very heroic thing to do ,our lovely Saviour said,'Greater love has no one than this;to lay down one's life  for one's friends',(John 15v13)I believe Sam did that in saving his son, he showed that greater love,but there is a greater love than this, when a person lays down his life for his enemies, that 's what Jesus did on the cross CP Romans 5 v 10.The fact is, before we become Christians we are God's enemies Jesus came into the world to save sinners- of whom I am the worse',said Paul (1 Timothy 1 v 15) .He did that for Paul , and He will do it for you ,even though you are His enemy, and ungodly ,turn to Him ,all of us were God's enemies,we were ungodly,  unrighteous,sinners,His death on the cross ,was, and is, the greatest manifestation of love ever shown. It was the apostle Paul who wrote,'God demonstrates His own love for us in this;while we were still sinners,Christ died for us'.

The sovereignty of God (Psalm 103 v19 )

Although books like Obadiah are small, they still the word of God,that goes for books in the NT,and they should not be discounted as having no value. In 2 Timothy 3 v i6 we read,'All scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching,rebuking, correcting,and training in righteousness'.It is Gordon Bridger writing on Obadiah says that we will find three great truths in that book to encourage us; (The sovereignty of God ) (The judgments of God) (The triumph of God)Let us consider the first one God's sovereignty,people struggle with this truth,but if God is not sovereign,then He is not God. Gordon Bridger asks the question,' The sovereignty of God; who is really in charge?'. Here is three quotations,'God is in charge of history. He is the mover in history'.(Motyer). 'Yahweh is sovereign in the history of the entire world, and freely exercises His will therein.( Baker) . Wars are not stirred up at random,but by the secret influence of God. ( Calvin).In Amos 3 v 6, we read,' 'When disaster comes to a city, has not the Lord caused it'.I have said ,and I  will say it again,the sovereignty of God is a great mystery,in other words we can never fully explain it.Like so many things taught in God's word we have to take them by faith, even in eternity we never full grasp this doctrine .I met an old friend recently as I read God's word,'And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God',(Romans 8 v28 ).Whatever we are going through now,or whatever we will go through later,hold to unto that promise from our sovereign God.

The Bible ( 2 Corinthians 3 v 1 -3 )

 I am just beginning a study of the book of  Obadiah ,it is the shortest book in the OT,and I don't think I have heard a sermon preached from it.Many of the minor prophet are neglected,they are called called the minor because they are usually much shorter than the major prophets.I have just finished Amos,and I found it very profitable,Alec Motyer's book in the series,' the Bible speaks today', it was excellent and I would  commend it to you.Don't go along with those people who say they just read the Bible,and refuse to use other godly men's writing. Take it from me ,I have been to Bible college ,been a full time minister,read the Bible through many many time,and I still use and  appreciate all the God given help I can find.Seek to get an over all understanding of the Bible,the context of each book,its author, the purpose it was written. It is a wonderful adventure reading the Bible,don't rush your reading,enjoy it, make notes,remember its a living word given to us by our living God,and it reveals unto us a living Saviour, don't be afraid to use different translation,even though you may just prefer one translation.Read the bible everyday, memorise it,meditate on it,and above all else,live it out, to the glory of God and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Judging others. ( Matthew 7 v 1- 5)

 In Matthew 7 v 1 ,we read'Do not judge,or you will be judged'.I heard something recently I want to share  with you. A man took his wife shopping,she was disabled,and if you are disabled you receive a disabled card which you display on your dashboard of your car,that enables you to park in the allotted spaces provided for those who are disabled. This the man did ,and he and his wife went to do their shopping. He left his wife in the store to take something back to his car,and then he would return to his wife.When he got to his car a man confronted him as to why he had parked  in a disabled bay ,when he wasn't  disabled.The man struck him knocking him to the ground,the result was the man died, such a tragedy,that man made a wrong judgement,and it led to a very wrong action causing the death of a poor man. Our Saviour said we are not to judge,for often our judgements our flawed,and ill conceived.Often our judgements are made from a self -righteous attitude. Michael Green wrote the following,' All to often what  we condemn in others are the weaknesses we dare not face up in ourselves'

Christian don't smile. ( Acts 16 v31 )

A man I knew told how when he was a little boy,he went with his mother to church,eventually he said to himself, ' I want to be a Christian,and he asked himself ,how can I become a Christian?. Well he thought about it and he said  ,'Christians never smile,so if I  don't smile I will be a Christian.So he went to school and a friend came to him and said do you want to hear a joke?,and he replied ,no ,'I am a Christian and Christian don't smile'.This really happened,and the good news is he did eventually become a Christian,and he did smile. So how does one  become a Christian?, well it is very easy,but its borne out of a need,you look at your life and you feel the emptiness within you ,and your conscious of  your sinfulness,the answer to all that is,'believe on the Lord Jesus and you shall be saved.'

I often wonder.( Philippians 1 v 22)

 I often wonder what heaven will be like,millions of people there,angels and then our wonderful God, I smile and think will it be standing room only?.If it was like that,how will we see Jesus?,after all that is whom we all want to see,will it be by appointment  only?.Of course it won't be like that,because God who made heaven is perfect,so it will be perfect,and it will be very personal ,I base this on two verses in Revelation .7v17/ 21 v4, where we are told ,'That God will wipe away every tear from their eyes'.Those words came across as very personal,although God is awesome, He also is very personal.Our God knows every star by name, will on that day  know us by name,and all that concerns  us,as He does now,He will not change from been personal here, to  impersonal there.We will have the warmth of His presence with us forever,here we can feel very lonely,there loneliness will be banned,everyone will be a friend,there will be no falling out,no need to say sorry,for we will not offend anyone, nor will anyone offend us,and so we could go on, heaven here we come, hallelujah.
